AOU The American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) is "the oldest and largest organization in the New World devoted to the scientific study of birds". The AOU North American Classification Committee (NACC) maintains a checklist of North and Middle American Birds for which updates are regularly published.

The geographic area covered includes North and Central America from the boundary of Panama and Colombia northwards and including Hawaii, Bermuda and the West Indies. It is thus significantly larger than the area covered by the ABA list.

The most recent update incorporated in BUBO Listing was the 56th supplement published in The Auk, Vol 132, pp748-764 (2015). This update has not been fully incorporated though: although species additions and deletions have been done, there are still some changes to English and scientific names, and many changes to systematic order and the families to which species were assigned, that have not yet been processed.

Either select the species to add by first selecting the authority to copy it from, then the particular species, or enter a new species directly below.

NB: Likely authorities hard-coded for now, but dropdown should ideally be restricted to parents of current authority only.

If selecting from another authority, you can still update the information below before adding the species.

NB: Species name is defaulted from the previous species row and should of course be overwritten!.

NB: Genus is defaulted from the previous species row but may need overwriting; specific needs to be entered in either case.

NB: Species id will be taken from the corresponding species on the authority being copied from, otherwise enter 0 for a totally new species.

NB: Need a way to enter a new family if required.

NB: Notes only allow up to 255 characters, but there is no enforcement of this. Anything longer will be truncated without warning.

Delete species

NB: Species name for the old taxon should be updated to differentiate it from the split taxa using a '/' or '[group]', e.g. Species A/Species B or Species A [group].

NB: Scientific should also be updated similarly, e.g. Genus specific A/specific B or Genus specific A [group].

NB: Split species must previously have been added through Add Species. Currently allow for split into 5 species.

NB: Ideally this should be done through a species lookup rather than direct entry of id.

NB: Notes only allow up to 255 characters, but there is no enforcement of this. Anything longer will be truncated without warning.

NB: Species name for the old taxon should be updated to differentiate it from the split taxa using '[lumped]', e.g. Species A [lumped].

NB: Scientific should also be updated, using '[lumped]' or brackets for the old specific name, e.g. Genus specific [lumped] or Genus [specific] subspecific.

NB: Lumped species must already exist.

NB: Ideally this should be done through a species lookup rather than direct entry of id.

NB: Notes only allow up to 255 characters, but there is no enforcement of this. Anything longer will be truncated without warning.
