The Ornithological Society of the Middle East (OSME) "exists to collect, collate and publish data on all aspects of the Ornithology of the Middle East region". This region includes the Caucasus and Central Asia: click on the map for a larger image or see the OSME website for more details.

OSME publish the OSME Region List (ORL) which aims to provide a definitive list of bird taxa that have been recorded in the OSME Region. This extremely thorough work has kindly been made available to BUBO Listing, and the version of it we use for Middle East lists, based on ORL v5.1, is shown below. The ORL details "taxa" rather than just species so in order to uses species level as we do in BUBO Listing we have applied the following guidelines to determine whether to include an ORL taxon:

  • it is a parent taxon without defined species, allospecies or semispecies
  • it is a species (and not a parent taxon)
  • it is an allospecies or semispecies
  • it's taxonomy is uncertain, but no parent taxon is included

The ORL largely aligns with IOC, and we follow that where species definition is unclear. The reader is urged to refer to the official ORL, in particular its "ornithological basis", for further detail and explanations.

BUBO Listing also provides individual country lists for countries (Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Georgia, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Yemen) within the OSME region, typically based on IOC and the ORL.

First select authority to copy existing species from, then type species name, or enter a new species directly.
Species name is defaulted from the previous species row and should of course be overwritten!
Genus is defaulted from the previous species row but may need overwriting; specific needs to be entered in either case.

NB: Species name for the old taxon should be updated to differentiate it from the split taxa using a '/' or '[group]', e.g. Species A/Species B or Species A [group].
NB: Scientific name should also be updated similarly, e.g. Genus specific A/specific B or Genus specific A [group]
NB: Notes only allow up to 255 characters, but there is no enforcement of this. Anything longer will be truncated without warning.
NB: Species name for the old taxon should be updated to differentiate it from the split taxa using '[lumped]', e.g. Species A [lumped].
NB: Scientific should also be updated, using '[lumped]' or brackets for the old specific name, e.g. Genus specific [lumped] or Genus [specific] subspecific.
NB: Notes only allow up to 255 characters, but there is no enforcement of this. Anything longer will be truncated without warning.
