Re:Adding more regions/countries to the Oriental region

Hi,
Is it planned to add more regions and countries to the Oriental region? Currently it appears that we have the Indian subcontinent and nothing else, so we can't enter lists for Japan, China, Malaysia, Borneo, etc.
Cheers,
Graham

Hi Graham
Yes it is, we eventually aim for full world coverage but being too busy with proper work has meant we haven't got very far recently
We always want to identify the best (i.e. most official) list for a country/region and then convert it into a format we can use. I'm not sure what 'authorities' exist for China, Malaysia and Borneo? (Japan we do have a list for, but haven't yet converted it to something we can easily use.) If you are aware of them then please let us know. Ideally the lists are available online and in a format we can easily use, e.g. Excel.
Also, if you could let us know the lists you'd like first it will help us prioritise getting them on board.

Hi Mike,
Glad to hear you're going for world domination
For myself, I'd be interested in lists for Japan, China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan) and Malaysia (including Brunei). I would think Thailand would be very useful to many other users too.
I know that the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society has a list. It can be downloaded in .xls at:
www.hkbws.org.hk/web/eng/download_eng.htm
This list also contains species status.
The Chinese (Taiwan) Wild Bird Federation list can be found at :
www.bird.org.tw/docs/TaiwanBirdChecklist.htm#
There is some species status in this, but it's in Chinese (presumably Mandarin. I should be able to find someone to help with this if you want to use it - just email if you need help).
As I say, other than Thailand, I'm not sure what other regions users would like to put priority on.
Thanks for the great site.
All the best,
Graham

Hi Graham
Thanks - both of these should be usable without too much difficulty. Where available we use species status to indicate which species are rare and hence we make date and location mandatory fields for these. If you are able to work any of this out then great, but we can always launch without rarities indicated (which is the case for all our other Oriental lists at the moment).
We also like to give credit to the authorities via a Checklists page , so if anyone is able to translate any of this so that we can give a bit of a plug to the Chinese (Taiwan) Wild Bird Federation then great. Luckily for us the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society have pages in English!
We'll push these requests to near the top of our to do list! ( Portugal is top, and nearly done!)

We have just added the Hong Kong list from
Hong Kong Bird Watching Society
, together with some recent updates, to BUBO Listing. Read more about it in our
species list FAQ
.
If you spot any errors then please let us know.
Enjoy HK listing on BUBO Listing!

Realising the enormous workload you already have I would like to see some more European countries such as Poland and Hungary. They do have excellent avifaunas and also presumably good lists.
In addition as an ex-member of the Jordanian Records Committee I know that there is a definitive Jordan list which is updated regularly and also a splendid list for Oman which is published as a small book on a regular basis.
Can anybody help with your workload? I know how to access the Oman List easily but would not know what format you would like it presented.
Cheers
Derek

In addition I know that my son Jeremy who has been living in Brunei for the last four years has been trying to establish an up todate list for that country.
With Clive Mann's excellent BOU Checklist to Borneo and Jeremy's efforts a list for Brunei should easily be achievable. It would have to be a bit ad hoc because there is no records committee in Brunei and in fact very few birders.
Cheers

Yes, Derek - we'd be very pleased to accept any help. The best format for a list for us is in Excel, with separate columns for as many as possible of:
English name, latin name, sort order, rare or not, pending or not, family, notes. For some countries, we'd inserted the name in the local language (e.g. French name) in the notes section.
Other than this, a bit of text explaining the source of the list, a link to the authority from which it comes, and the date that the list was last updated by the authority, are also extremely useful.
Cheers
