Target/Blocker Lists - Use Parent Location

09 Feb 2023 15:03 #1984 by John Conlin-Hulme
Hi,

I wondered if it would be possible, that where a location has no, or only a few listers (<5 maybe?)  - for it to calculate the Target and Blocker lists using that locations parent in the location tree.

i.e. For Rodley Nature Reserve, it is using 3 lists (mine and 2 others). Not very useful really. Perhaps a comparison to 'West Yorkshire' would be more appropriate?

Ta,

John

To be honest, I'm not sure how that would work in practice. The targets are the species that you need for the given location, so giving you targets for a potentially much larger parent location, or comparing against people who have seen the species but in the wider location, doesn't seem very helpful. I think it would make more sense just to have the parent list as well and do targets from there.

Unless I'm missing something?

Fair enough - I was just thinking that currently the way they work doesn't help when you have nobody to compare to - for instance I have a Paull Holme Strays list and I am the only one who uses BUBO for that location - so the target list just lists every unseen bird at 0%.

BTW, I'm not trying to be critical, I think what you've built here is awesome!

Oh, the percentage for the Blockers list seems a bit weird too - In my Rodley Nature Reserve list, which has 3 listers, the birds we have all seen show up as 150% is this intended?

I agree, it doesn't make much sense when there are no other listers for that location, but I'm not sure comparing it against another location instead is helpful either, at least for targets. Blockers maybe: if you've seen a species that no-one else has, then it would be interesting to see how many have seen it in a wider location. Probably complicated to implement though, so I think leaving the user to manually check on the wider location will have to do!

Oops, this was a bug! Now fixed

Thank you!
