BUBO Listing News
Following the update to American Ornithological Society (AOU) and American Birding Association (ABA) checklists in BUBO Listing, we have also updated all US state authority checklists. These now follow the latest AOS taxonomy, and incorporate new species additions for all states where known. Many states do not themselves update their published lists regularly so there are undoubtedly a few errors in our state lists. If you find any, please let us know in the forum.
All North American checklists on BUBO Listing are updated to the latest official published versions and taxonomies. In particular this includes the authorities listed below (shown with the major species changes):
American Ornithological Society (AOS) - AOS 60th supplement (June 2019)
- White-winged Scoter split into Velvet Scoter Melanitta fusca, White-winged Scoter M. deglandi and Stejneger’s Scoter M. stejnegeri
- Grey-faced Petrel Pterodroma gouldi split from Great-winged Petrel P. macroptera
- Monteiro’s Storm-Petrel Hydrobates monteiroi split from Band-rumped Storm-Petrel H. castro
- Orange-bellied Trogon Trogon aurantiiventris lumped into Collared Trogon T. collaris
American Birding Association (ABA) - v8.0.5 (December 2018), incorporating taxonomic changes from AOS 59th supplement
- White-collared Seedeater Sporophila torqueola split into Cinnamon-rumped Seedeater S. torqueloa and Morelet's Seedeater S. moreletti
- Chivi Vireo Vireo chivi split from Red-eyed Vireo V. olivaceus
- And from earlier 2018 updates, the addition of new species: Black-backed Oriole, Great Black Hawk, Red-backed Shrike, Pied Wheatear, and Mistle Thrush, Indian Peafowl, European Robin, Thick-billed Warbler, and River Warbler
We have also pre-empted the above taxonomic changes from AOS 60th supplement which ABA is likely to adopt formally in December 2019.
Importantly we now extend our ABA area to include Hawaii, as per the v8.0.1 (November 2017) update, which results in over 100 new species being available. We keep the 'old' ABA Continental Traditional area for historical lists (pre 2016) but you should use the new ABA Area location, including Hawaii, in future.
The IOC World List has now been updated to the latest published version 9.2 from June 2019.
Several changes were made to the Little Shrikethrush complex. Other splits that will gain listers a few armchair ticks include White-winged and Stejneger's Scoters, Indian Roller, Tickell's Blue Flycatcher and South African Long-billed Pipits, whilst we say goodbye to Barbary Falcon as a distinct species.
Regional or country lists based on IOC, such as the IOC Western Palearctic list, have also been updated.
We now automatically apply these updates where we can, and in other cases you will be prompted for any taxonomic changes to address yourself.
The Clements World List has now been updated to the latest 2018 updates.
As always, you'll be notified of the taxonomic updates you need to apply.
What can a keen birder do when it's pouring down with rain outside, or it's dark and the owls aren't calling? Stay inside and watch television of course! But never fear, the birding doesn't need to stop there: we've just launched Television Lists on BUBO Listing!
When creating a list, just ensure you set list type to "Television". To enable more fun comparisons with other TV listers we recommend you use a World list and IOC as the authority, but if you are really addicted then you can always do a TV year list!
As with other lists, we don't enforce rules, but we suggest birds should at least be alive and not captive, so this one wouldn't count...
