I have been birding for 4 years, beginning when I was 24. My interesting in birding began through photography, but has since evolved into much more. Don't twitch too much, and mostly just hope for luck.

The world of birding came upon me gradually, beginning as early as I can remember listening to and imitating the calls of Cardinals in the backyard. As a child I remember paging through a dusty old field guide in amazement at all the colors and varieties of birds. Family camping trips with my birdwatching relatives fueled the slow burning ember. At about age 18 I purchased a field guide for my Dad who was wanting to start a new hobby. I couldn't put the book down. I absorbed everything I could read. I happily identified birds in my backyard and on my many outdoor hikes and fishing trips with my family. Fate brought a birding mentor into my life who introduced me to a whole other side to this hobby. My first Big Day brought me 70+ life birds, fanning the flame into a blaze. I have been passionate about birding ever since. I've traipsed through chigger-infested grass, climbed the bluffs of the Ozarks, gotten stuck tire-deep in the mud of the Arkansas river bottoms, and have ventured to Florida, Wisconsin, and Arizona with many states in between to bird with my sister and cousin. I look forward to this lifelong passion that will bring many more adventures.

I have been a Herts birder all my life, when I started out in the early 1980’s birds like willow tit, tree sparrow, hawfinch were all fairly common occurrences. I practiced my craft on my local patch which covered Welwyn, The Ayots, Sherrardspark Wood, Brocket Park, Symondshyde Farm, Waterend & Blackbridge. I did it the hard way & with Bill Oddie's Little Black Bird Book as my bible I perfected my field skills & learnt my common birds. Something which is a bit of a rarity these days, I tend to come across people who really don’t have a clue. For a while I strayed into twitching & to be honest I kind of enjoyed it but, as the crowds turned from hardcore barbour wearing birders to bird flushing, tick hungry duffers I moved away from that scene. Did manage to get over 400 though. I do still dabble from time to time but generally with the long stayers so when I go there is normally no one else around. In the mid 1990’s I put the bins down & gave up birding for a few years, I blame alcohol & woman for that or at least my weakness towards them. Since my return, I haven’t looked back & to be frank I don’t think it ever really left me, once a birder always a birder.
