July 2020: The Birdwatch Magazine list does not seem to be maintained by Birdwatch Magazine any more, and has not had recent, generally accepted, taxonomic changes applied. Therefore, we are no longer supporting it on BUBO Listing. We recommend listers useĀ BOU instead.

The list of British birds published by Birdwatch Magazine, and produced by Dominic Mitchell and Keith Vinicombe. The list was published initially in 2006, and then updated in 2008, 2010 and 2012 [not sure if it was ever updated further?]. This list is somewhat more liberal than that of the BOU but more conservative than the one produced by the UK400 club.

Although the list applies to Britain (and the Isle of Man), it does contain an appendix covering additional species recorded only in Ireland. As a result, the Birdwatch authority can be used for lists in Britain & Ireland or smaller units (i.e. countries and counties) of this area.

Species currently considered as comprising the Birdwatch List for BUBO Listing purposes are shown below.

First select authority to copy existing species from, then type species name, or enter a new species directly.
Species name is defaulted from the previous species row and should of course be overwritten!
Genus is defaulted from the previous species row but may need overwriting; specific needs to be entered in either case.

NB: Species name for the old taxon should be updated to differentiate it from the split taxa using a '/' or '[group]', e.g. Species A/Species B or Species A [group].
NB: Scientific name should also be updated similarly, e.g. Genus specific A/specific B or Genus specific A [group]
NB: Notes only allow up to 255 characters, but there is no enforcement of this. Anything longer will be truncated without warning.
NB: Species name for the old taxon should be updated to differentiate it from the split taxa using '[lumped]', e.g. Species A [lumped].
NB: Scientific should also be updated, using '[lumped]' or brackets for the old specific name, e.g. Genus specific [lumped] or Genus [specific] subspecific.
NB: Notes only allow up to 255 characters, but there is no enforcement of this. Anything longer will be truncated without warning.
