The IOC Europe list uses a subset of species from the complete world taxonomy maintained by the IOC and which is updated regularly at www.worldbirdnames.org.
We follow the boundaries of Europe as summarised by Wikipedia. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and Asia to the east. It shares the landmass of Eurasia with Asia, and of Afro-Eurasia with both Africa and Asia. Europe is separated from Asia by the watershed of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, the Greater Caucasus, the Black Sea, and the waterway of the Bosporus Strait. It includes all of the major Mediterranean Islands except for Cyprus. We do not include any of the Atlantic Islands within Europe.
