438 listers have NOT amalgamated Steppe Grey Shrike into GGS yet?

Including moi (:-

But should this be mandatory?

Or am I missing something? Has it not been lumped into the Great Grey Shrike complex as a sub-species?

Assuming you mean on BOU lists? The BOURC have not yet published taxonomic changes arising from the IOC January 2019 updates, and hence still treat Steppe Grey Shrike as a full species on the www.bou.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/0...-List-2019-02-01.pdf .

Whilst we pre-empt changes to lists for new species occurrences, removing them later if not accepted, we have always waited for official confirmation of taxonomic changes. Since the BOURC do now follow IOC in taxonomic matters we could adopt any IOC changes for the British list as soon as IOC publish them instead of waiting for the BOURC's typically annual update. What do people think about this?

Thanks for explaining the rational to me Mike, I understand now.

Not sure what others think, it's a difficult one, I'm surprised BOURC have not announced this lumping yet, we are 5 months on, but surely inevitable soon.

My post wasn't intended to be critical of BUBO BTW, its quite superb and fulfils my listing objectives perfectly - so thank you.

Anyway, I don't have strong views either way on this, may as well wait til BOURC officially announce it.

I would prefer it if IOC changes were adopted by Bubo as soon as they are announced, rather than wait for BOU.

cheers

I alluded to this very issue way back in January of this year, shortly after the IOC adopted the
"lumping" of Steppe Grey Shrike back into the Great Grey Shrike complex (version 9.1).

The British & Irish List BOU/IRBC does not include Steppe Grey Shrike (Lanius pallidostris) but Southern Grey Shrike (Lanius meridionalis) instead. A tad confusing.

BOURC have now amalgamated Steppe Grey Shrike into Great Grey Shrike so unfortunately Steppe Grey Shrike needs to go.

Right - Steppe Shrike now lumped with Great Grey Shrike, so it should have disappeared from the checklists (BOU and B&I) and individual list totals. Let me know if you see anything not right as a result.

Wouldn't be surprised if it reappears in future!

The totals page and headline total on Britain BOU are now wrong looking at my list. With Steppe Grey gone there appears to be 1 less bird on my list than on my total. So I don't think the total altered when it came off.
