Combined Listing

I've never seen it before, nor even thought anyone/people would do it,but I see there is a combined list by multiple birders on BUBO,in that they are not all seeing every bird.
There is nothing wrong with doing this in my opinion, but it can't go towards any records as simple logic says you could just combine every person who agreed sightings for one year and have a phenomenal total without ever leaving your own back garden.
Apart from any group having an advantage over an individual in that they have more funds and time available than one person(on average)they can also be in more than one place at one time and therefore if two birds appear at opposite ends of the country at the same time and have short stays they can "tick"both, whereas the individual hasn't got a chance.
Fun,it might be,but record-breaking it isn't.

Likewise Bruce, I am somewhat bemused by this. There seems to be no point or value in doing this. Any list accrued in this fashion wouldn't attract any credence. It can only be a 'fun' thing.

Yes,Dan,the only thing that worries me about it is on a site like BUBO it is pushing genuine listers down the list, and you have to subtract one for each multiple person list to get the right pecking order(excuse the pun)

To be perfectly honest and not wishing to be a killjoy, I don't think combined/multiple person lists have any place on a site such as BUBO and should be excluded.

Yep, I agree. It's a fun thing to do, building up a list for a group, and perhaps we ought to look at adding this as a separate function one day for groups to compare vs other groups, but it's not really fair to insert a list for a group in amongst the ranking for individuals' lists. I've asked the Young Birders to remove their lists (but to stay involved as individuals by all means).

Cheers

Andy
