African Collared Dove and ABA Area

11 Jul 2020 02:25 #1 by David Daniels
This site won’t allow me to add African Collared Dove to my ABA Area list. It is an extirpated exotic that is “countable” according to ABA rules. Any way we can get this so I can add it to my list?

Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Hi David

Are you sure about that? It's not listed in the latest ABA checklist .

Hi Mike,

With its 2014 changes to Recording Rules, extirpated exotics may now be counted on ABA lists, subject to certain requirements.

African Collared Dove (originally on the ABA list as Ringed Turtle Dove) was removed from the checklist in 1994. I saw the species prior to that date so I can therefore count it.

Go to the ABA website menu, click on Resources, go to the ABA Checklist, and scroll down to Extirpated Exotics for more information.

Thanks,

David

So as I understand you can count it on your ABA life list if you saw it before 1994, or any year lists prior to that but not subsequently. Unfortunately that isn't something we can support in BUBO Listing: it's either on the list or not. If we added it, it would probably prompt more incorrect entries with people adding it based on recent sightings, and to current or recent year lists. It would be a bit complicated to implement, so I suggest you just use your list comments to note any countable extirpated exotics.
