Barnacle Goose 2010

09 Jan 2011 02:22 #1 by Pauleen Rafferty
Dear All - I am a total beginner and starting my life list. Whilst touring NW Scotland in September 2010 I saw a small flock of Barnacle Geese - pretty sure - somewhere between Lochinver and Lairg. Being dozy I forgot to note it down. I haven't been able to find a sighting listed online - can anyone help me place them?

Hi Pauleen - welcome aboard!

Just to say that Barnacle Geese (from the Greenland breeding population) are pretty widespread in north-west Scotland in the winter. The largest numbers are on Islay and some of the other islands, but small flocks can occur widely. I wouldn't expect your sighting to have been logged anywhere specifically. However, WWT has some really useful information on Barnacle Geese, and the following report, of a census carried out in 2008, may help jog your memory - it has a map of key sites

Cheers

Hi Andy, thanks for your message. Checked out the link you sent and WOO HOO it did jog my memory and, although I still don't know the exact location, I did manage to pinpoint the nearest location. Really appreciate the help, especially coz it was my first Barnacle Goose tick. Thanks also for not making me feel like a total fool, being a real greenhorn & all.
