Hi Rob

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, and sorry for the delay in following it up. I'm trying to work out the various discrepancies but it is a bit complicated! What is the status of various introduced species on the Dutch list? We originally used the "progressive" list from www.dutchbirding.nl/index.php?lang=en and include several introduced species of captive origin. I can't find any reference to a "progressive" list any more, and these captive species are no longer included in the main list according to www.dutchbirding.nl/content/page/files/webprog20110101-72.pdf and the list you gave. These species are Black Swan*, Bar-headed Goose*, Egyptian Goose*, Mandarin Duck*, Ruddy Duck*, Common Pheasant*, African Sacred Ibis, Chilean Flamingo*, Common Pigeon*, Alexandrine Parakeet, Rose-ringed Parakeet* and House Finch; we have the asterisked ones on BUBO Listing at the moment, plus Canvasback, Barrow’s Goldeneye and Black-headed Wagtail that Dutch Birding no longer list at all.

Aside from these, I think we need to add “soft-plumaged petrel”, Caspian Plover, Long-toed Stint, Cabot's Tern, Oriental Turtle Dove, Moltoni's Warbler and Northern Waterthrush.

Would appreciate any clarification you can give.

I think the main usable reference is the (PDF)list you linked to on the Dutchbirding website.

The "progressive" part referred to acceptance by the Dutch rarities committee as a new species for the Dutch list (@this stage only relevant for hooded merganser..... but then, since some recent semi-wild breeding records, they might be going to CAT C?).

The introduced/established species are in Cat C, but as you mentioned not included in the main list. Most people do not pay any attention tot which of those species you have or haven't seen, so I don't think they are very relevant for any Dutch list comparison purposes.

Cat C:species
I am not sure why Mexican house finch is included?? Chilean flamingo only breeds just across the border in Germany, the rest are incidental/established breeding birds.

The three species (Canvasback, Barrow's & Black-headed wagtail) you mentioned are indeed not on the Dutch list (anymore). The additions you mentioned can be added I think.

I don't know if this clarifies anything. I am more than happy to respond to remaining questions.

Hi Rob

That helps, thanks. Do Dutch birders tend not to count any of these introduced species on their lists when comparing totals? We would probably be best removing them if that is the case (and also removing any records that people have added previously), but I want to make sure before we do anything drastic!

No, the Dutch ranking system ( www.dutchbirdalerts.nl/ranking.action ) is based on the main list (CAT A) only.

I have now updated both the Dutch Birding Netherlands list, and the Dutch Birding Western Palearctic lists, to take into account of new species additions and various splits.

I haven't yet removed the introduced species that DB no longer include, because this will remove them from people's lists as well and is a bit more complicated, but I will do this shortly.

As normal, you will see a message displayed if any of the taxonomic changes affect your lists, and can then update them appropriately.

Also the Dutch Birding lists make several changes to the taxonomic sequence for passerines, and there are a few species moved from one family to another. These I haven't addressed, because they are a bit tedious to do! If anyone would like to help out with this task (an hour or two of work comparing/updating lists in Excel) then please let me know: we're always appreciative of any help :)

The Dutch Birding Netherlands list is now fully up to date. Thanks to Rob for his help with this.

Several introduced species, e.g. Black Swan, Ruddy Duck, Common Pheasant, have been removed by Dutch Birding. Since these all have several records entered in BUBO Listing we haven't deleted them yet, but will do so soon. Any listers who therefore lose some records in the process, and whose list totals will therefore go down, will be notified.

Introduced species have now been deleted so the BUBO Listing Netherlands list accurately reflects the official Dutch Birding list. Apologies to the many people who have lost ticks in this process! You will have received emails detailing the species that have been removed.
