Losing some data when applying taxonomic updates

20 Dec 2013 01:04 #1 by Geoff Morgan
Just noticed that as taxonomic updates have applied to lifers that I had in 2013 [Sunda Woodpecker and whatever the Crimson Sunbird is now called (!)] these birds are now in my world list without their dates and locations.

Maybe I missed the option to preserve this info when I applied the update or maybe this feature is not available?

Hi Geoff

I'm not quite sure what has happened here - we don't automatically apply taxonomic updates to people's lists so you shouldn't lose data. Instead we keep the "old" taxa on your list and allow you to add the "new" taxa, and delete the "old" when you are done. This does mean that if you had entered dates and locations for the old taxa you would have to re-enter them for the new one, and as far as I can see the only place where you could potentially lose data would be if you removed the old taxa from your list before adding the new.

The process is described in more detail at www.bubo.org/News/taxonomic-updates-in-bubo-listing.html . Not sure whether this helps explain whatever happened here?

Cheers

Thanks Mike. I used the taxonomic update button then went through the checklist adding the new species and deleting the old. I had not realised that the dates and locations have to be reentered at this stage but it does make sense. I'll just be more careful next time.
