Dutch Birding LIst of WP Species

29 Sep 2009 18:21 #1 by Tristan Reid
Hi,

Would it be possible to add another 'listing authority' based on (or similar to) the Dutch Birding 'bird names' (see: www.dutchbirding.nl/page.php?page_id=229 ) which includes all sub-species recorded in the WP.

With this facility we would be able to create a list of 'Recognisable avian phenotypes'.

Regards
Tristan

An excellent idea, Tristan. I have been chasing subspecies/forms for a long time and I would be happy to put my list on. Cheers Steve

Tristan

The Dutch Birding list doesn't contain all subspecies, just a selection of the most recognisable ones.

Actually, we do have the Dutch Birding Western Pal list available already, although I'm always surprised that virtually no-one seems to have used it yet. Perhaps no-one spotted it. I do need to make some updates to it though, so thanks for bringing this latest version of the list to my attention.

In terms of subspecies listing, it's an interesting idea but as Steve P says, the list isn't complete in that regard. What I'd really like to do is get an entire list of world subspecies/species/superspecies into the database, in a hierarchical tree, which would then make it easier to help folk update lists when various authorities split and lump species. This isn't going to happen imminently though, until I've cleared up one or two other little projects.

For the time being, for folk keen on recording subspecies, the best option is to include the ones you've seen in the comments field against a list entry.

Cheers

Andy

Thanks Steve - The area of this I am interested in is probably best described as 'recognisable avian phenotypes' - so the Dutch list would probably cover this quite well.

Andy - Is it possible to have this 'list authority' as an option under Britain & Ireland?

Well, it's possible but I'm not sure it seems right? If we did this, it would be possible to add Hazel Grouse to a B&I list, etc etc. Perhaps not a huge problem, but it could lead to confusion. What do other folk think. The UK400 and, to a lesser extent, Birdwatch lists largely follow the Dutch Birding lead so perhaps you could try these? Thoughts?

Fair comment Andy; however what I was hoping for was a list of 'identifiable avian phenotypes' - therefore the UK400 or Birdwatch lists would not cover every form.
