Another addition to the WP list, a Crimson-rumped Waxbill photographed at Abu Simbel today. Not the first report from the site but the first confirmed I believe.

Following the Avilist lumps announced this week, the following have been removed from the WP list.
Basalt Wheatear
Cabot's Tern
Green-winged Teal
Maghreb Lark
Maghreb Owl
Yellow-billed Kite
Cape Verde Buzzard
Mediterranean Flycatcher

The remaining 6 lumps are not straightforward and will need to wait for Bubo to implement the new taxonomy.

A sad day unfortunately.

Hi Graeme,

Thanks as always for your quick updates! However, why not wait until 15.2 IOC is posted? As this list is still under IOC authority, is it not a bit strange to implement AviList taxonomy already?
Or what is the reason for making these changes already?

Kindest regards,
Diedert

Hi Diedert

IOC and Avilist are now one and the same. I thought it be easier to delete the 'obvious' species now to save a lot of work for everyone once those 8 changes are implemented. The remaining 6 are ones where not everyone may have seen the obvious one, so they will have to wait for Bubo to bring in the new taxonomy. So for those 6 everyone will have to review their own lists accordingly,  which is enough work as it is!

Cheers, Graeme

I believe only when IOC 15.2 is published are AviList and IOC one and the same. I'm not sure when they are doing this, but currently we won't preempt AviList changes before IOC publish them because it would cause various complications.

Hi Mike and Graeme,

Yes, that is what I was referring to in essence. Basically we are now 'jumping the gun' to IOC 15.2, but it is a bit semantical, I guess.

Sorry, there was a confusion between Graeme and I both doing updates. We've "jumped the gun" slightly with our IOC WP list now, but will hold off on other IOC changes for the moment as we can then apply them at one time for all IOC country lists as well.

With lumps elsewhere on BUBO, the first sighting details of the deleted species have been added in the comments of the species it has been lumped into, which is a helpful approach in case of re-splits. This doesn't appear to have been done with these deletions. Is the data retrievable?

Hi Steve
Unfortunately it's not practical to retrieve the details for all IOC WP lists of these species that were accidentally deleted rather than lumped.

Following discussions with leading German listers, it has become apparent that the club300.de checklist is used by listers in Germany. So the Bubo WP list (IOC for now) will follow this. Hence the following 3 species have been added as Category C species:

Greater Rhea
Swan Goose
Yellow-headed Amazon

Greater Rhea?????
Time to reconsider what can count as Category C,  or how listers view it.

Why, Steve?
Perhaps you are unaware of the massive (imo) population of feral Rheas in Germany?

See here for example:
.
"The South American greater rhea has been spreading in northeastern Germany for 20 years. What began as a small population has now grown to 600 Rheas. The brazen birds are voracious eaters, and they wreak havoc on farmers' crops."
